Historians say that the Burning Springs petroleum deposits was the richest shallow well oil pool the world had ever known when discovered in 1860. The now extinct town once boasted a population of 6,000 at the height of the oil boom. It was located in Wirt County, about 38 miles up the river from Parkersburg.

Author Howard B. Lee also wrote the first book on the West Virginia Mine Wars, Bloodletting in Appalachia, as well as serving as the state Attorney General from 1925-1933.
